The Challenges of Assessing in the Professional Training Environment

Professor Mantz Yorke, University of Lancaster

Assessment in the professional training environment accentuates many of the challenges that are encountered when assessing students in the academic environment, e.g.

·         standards and thresholds

·         technical quality of assessments (validity, reliability, and so on)

·         competency of assessors

·         formative feedback to enable learners to develop

·         grading and summative judgements of performance

·         reporting assessment outcomes

In this seminar Professor Yorke draws on a synthesis of research undertaken for the Practice-Based Professional Learning Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the Open University to set out some key considerations relating to assessment in professional training environments.
